GLD Series - Allen & Heath Digital Mixer

Ready to tick all the boxes? Allen & Heath has been working hard at this one for a while, we're guessing. And possibly the name says it all - their much-loved analogue GL Series has kept A&H up the top of the tree for so long in live venues, and with mobile production companies, and now (thanks to plenty of innovation inherited from the iLive series) we've got a Digital soloution at an analogue price.

We haven't played with one yet, seeing as GLD was only announced today, but since Allen & Heath has always delivered in spades, since back when all of us at Factory Sound were still wearing shorts, let's borrow a bit of blurb from their pen: "As you would expect from Allen & Heath, GLD delivers outstanding audio performance, with a new high-end mic preamp, low latency and the DSP muscle to provide full processing without compromise. GLD-80's FX engines are taken directly from the iLive system and feature beautifully crafted emulations of industry classics."

But how does it all work? First of all there's the tactile heart of the system - the GLD-80 digital mixer. Via XLR, you get 4 in and 4 out (plus other I/O), so to fully get the system happening, you'll need to add either a GLD-AR2412 (main audio rack, 3RU, 24 XLR in, 12 XLR out), up to two GLD-AR0804 (expander audio rack, 1RU, 8 XLR in, 4 XLR out) - or any combination of all three, for a total XLR I/O count of 48/24.

As a nice little addition, there's even an 'Aviom' port on the GLD-2412, just to help out if you've already sorted your stage monitoring rig. And of course, we're really just scratching the surface here. GLD has the ability to record and playback a stereo signal on a USB memory stick. Standard iLive audio I/O option cards for Dante, MADI, EtherSound and Allen & Heath's ACE protocols can be fitted, allowing multi-channel record/playback, FOH/monitor splits, and connection to A&H iLive systems, which can easily be configured using GLD's extensive soft-patching.

We're seriously looking forward to getting stock, so make sure you keep an eye out - watch this GLD space. Thanks to Allen & Heath, it looks like a very happy new year in 2012.

Presonus StudioLive: go harder with Universal Control 1.5.2

Presonus, you've done it again. Not content with a simple software nip, tuck and tidy up to cater for Mac OS X® 10.7  (Lion), this latest version of Universal Control is a big plus for current (or future) StudioLive users.

First of all, straight to the big one - for anyone who's been wanting more graphic EQ for their StudioLive 16.4.2 you've now got it. In fact, how does six of them sound! Here's the extended blurb via Presonus website:

"StudioLive 16.4.2 mixer owners can now take advantage of six 31-band graphic EQs that are dedicated to the aux buses, variable (2 to 500 ms) output delays on each subgroup, and Aux Flip mode, which lets you include the Tape input, Main FireWire return, Aux A input Aux B input, FXA bus, and FXB bus in Aux mixes 1 through 6.

And just so no-one is feeling left out, StudioLive 16.0.2 owners have also been shown the love here, with "added compatability for PreSonus StudioLive Remote control software for Apple iPad® - a much-requested feature. With this update, StudioLive 16.0.2 owners can choose to record channels 1 through 16, as before, or can record channels 1 through 14 and the L/R main bus. Thus, you can use the StudioLive 16.0.2 to mix down previously recorded tracks and record the stereo mix to PreSonus Capture™ or to a DAW (including PreSonus Studio One™)"

It's a free download, so do it now! Here's the link to the Presonus press release page, which contains the download (down the bottom), and a bit more info. We've already updated our store demo consoles, and it's definitely exciting times ahead.

Midas announces PRO2 & PRO2C consoles

For anyone who had been keeping an eye on MidasConsoles.com over the past week, you'll have noticed a little countdown going on. We've now arrived at the launch date, and the cone of silence has officially been lifted, as has the cloak of invisibility, and more importantly - the level of excitement!

What's it all about?
Midas released two new consoles at the PLASA trade show in Earls Court, London over the weekend. The PRO2, and smaller (compact) PRO2C look set to make some serious waves in the pro audio pool.

Both consoles have some serious power under the hood, and some well thought-out feature plus a few party tricks that together tick all the boxes. From the looks we were privy to before the official launch date, it's fair to say that it we have been VERY excited. Now that PRO2 is launched, we're ready for our support training, which starts tomorrow.

We've put links to the brand new consoles above, but if you want a really fast overview, check out the Midas PRO2 FAQ page here. Or you can come and check them out...when we get stock. Rumoured to be roughly a month-and-a-half away from yesterday's launch date but stay tuned - we'll definitely keep you posted.

And the long-form blurb:
The Midas PRO2 and PRO2C may be the smallest and least expensive Midas digital consoles so far; however, they represent a quantum leap forward in both technology and in concept for the art of audio mixing. Extending the line begun with the Pro6, previously expanded upwards and downwards in configuration with the Pro9 and Pro3 desks, the new Midas PRO2 and PRO2c ("C" for Compact) maintain the sonic performance of their XL8 and Pro Series, advance Midas' innovations in console navigation and live production control, while setting a new company standard for value.

The core specifications for both the PRO2 and PRO2c are: 64 input channels, 32 outputs, 27 busses, six stereo FX engines, and 28 KT Graphic EQs. Systems comprised of a control surface, a DL251 I/O unit, two 100m Cat5 cables, and a flight case are priced at $25,995 INC GST (PRO2c) or $32,995 INC GST (PRO2).

PRO2 can be operated in a number of different ways, depending upon the experience, ability and willingness of the operator to adopt new ideas. In "normal" mode, PRO2 behaves in a manner similar to many other digital consoles. Engineers who are new to Midas digital can relax, enjoy the PRO2's sample-synchronous audio quality, and operate the console from well within their comfort zone. As an operator becomes increasingly familiar with the console, they can activate the advanced navigation features which enable access to undreamt of levels of ease and speed of workflow on an audio console. Digital or Analogue!
