GoPro cameras are GO!

Whew, our stock has finally arrived. GoPro cameras are offically GO at Factory Sound. And why were we waiting for stock? NEW MODELS!

The new Hero 2 version is truly a beast, with now 10 Megapixel resolution, and image capture like you would expect from an improved version of the GoPro Hero. These cameras have traditionally been aimed at the 'sporting' types. In fact, the more dangerous or extreme the sport, the better a GoPro Hero is suited. Without a handlebar mounted Hero on a mountain bike, we would have completely missed this dude getting wiped out by an antelope buck who has an obvious dislike for lycra-clad invaders.

The Hero cams are (due to the huge image they can capture) often placed inside racing cars for intimate footage, but we see them as being the ultimate effect camera for bands on stage, strapped to microphone stands, instruments, flown from lighting bars, and even used at the front of stage for punter cam - performer POV style. You could film your whole show with 3 or 4 of these cameras, or just chop some footage in amongst your big money camera shots for a great effect.

Waterproof to 60m, shock resistant, and able to not only take true HD footage, but also ridiculously easy time-lapse photo montages, the Hero cameras are a sight to behold. For a limited time, we'll have some of the older (original) models for a discounted price - just until the whole range is refreshed with version 2 models. Search our website for GoPro to get some insipration, and while you're at at - check the video below made by GoPro - entirely captured by the new Hero 2 camera. Very impressive (all sport, no musical performances though).

Rycote InVision series Studio Mic and Camera Kits

We've got a nice bunch of Rycote gear lobbing this week. You may already be familiar with the InVision series USM (Universal Shock Mount), which we've had since mid-way through 2010, but the series has been seriously ramped up of late.

Not only is there now a complete kit for studio microphones - including an integrated PopFilter, but for those wanting to use a shotgun for some more serious point-and-shoot camera work, there is now a complete kit to suit just about any camera matched with any shotgun microphone.

We understand it may be hard to get worked up over a shock mount - it's not like we're watching the film clip to ONJ's Physical, but for the more gear-spec-geek type, these InVision products are a serious step forward in shockmount technology.

The heart of this series is Rycote's patented vibration-resistant Lyre mount (explanatory pdf via Rycote website), which seriously improves your studio sound by not only reducing mechanical vibrations, but also doing it in the right way. Rather than a blanket "suspend this mic in a cat's cradle" arrangement, the W-shaped Lyres allow for little-to-no sideways movement, and just the right forward to back movement to preserve your hard-earned sounds.

Back to the documentary maker, the camera kits come complete with 'everything' and have hit a very juicy price. The Lyre mount system is there to minimise camera and movement noise, you get a variety of shockmount-to-camera accessories, and you also get what Rycote is famous for - protection against the wind. Not only is there a Miniscreen (slip on windshield), but also a Windjammer to really deal with the outside environment. All up, you're armed with around -30dB of wind noise attenuation.

Choose the best camera kit for your shotgun by eyeballing your shotgun mic on this list (pdf via Rycote website). Basically, the kit you require will depend on what length of 'open bits' your shotgun mic has.

As for the studio mics, size doesn't matter - but the weight certainly does. There are only two options for either the USM (shockmount only) or StudioKit (with PopFilter), and it depends whether your microphone is under 400g or between 400-750g. At the time of this writing, there is no option for a serious big bertha microphone, but we're well covered for most of the studio staples, such as AKG C414, Neuman U87, TLM102/3, Sennheiser MK4, AudioTechnica, Mann, Rode, et al. For a fairly comprehensive list of what mount is best for your microphone, check this pdf (via Rycote website). Bear in mind that it's not safer to 'go the heavier one', as it won't offer optimum performance for your lightweight microphone.

Because we've placed a big order, we're doing nice deals on all of these Rycote product. Get in touch to make sure you're getting hooked up with the best possible deal. AND if you're still looking for more info, head on over to Rycote's demo area, where you'll find some futher background information and sound grabs.

What kind of Video Producer are you?

Screens and speakers, they obviously go hand-in-hand. But how do you fit into the world of video production. Do-it-yourself filmclips to go with your killer song? Perhaps vision is your primary thing, and someone else sorts the audio out for you? Maybe you're not a hands-on person at all, and a talented team of creative individuals comes together to help breathe life into your ideas.

Tone and Artie were lucky enough to be invited as guests of the AVPA this week, for their annual awards dinner. Not only do we get to present a couple of awards each year, we also get to see the best videos on a big screen. A wide range of categories, from weddings, school stage productions, company safety induction and training videos, corporate presentations and sales tools, along with TV news reports and commercials. There is a huge breadth of video production service providers out there, and an equally large and diverse range of client requirements.

Which leads us back to - what kind of video producer are you? If you are the kind who is very handy with a camera and has a keen eye for a cut, you'll need to ensure your audio quality is as high as possible to ensure your hard work is not let down by poor sound. Enter... Waves and their brand new collections of plug-ins designed especially for the video producer:

waves_video-sound-suiteVideo Sound Suite Native integrates seamlessly into Avid Media Composer 5, Apple Soundtrack Pro, and Sony Vegas. Because they're real-time plugins, it's no longer necessary to render or create new files for every audio adjustment, and making audio changes weeks or months later is a breeze.

For the more adventurous, Sound Design Suite Native comes stacked with over 30 plugins hand-picked especially for sound designers and post production facilities - a comprehensive and cost-effective collection of audio plugins that provides all the essentials.

Until the end of Novemember, you'll be able to pick these up from Factory Sound at a whopping 55% off the Recommended Retail Prices listed on our website. Excellent value for a premium audio tool.

Don't forget you'll need an iLok to authorise your new friends...but we've got those too if you've been caught short.

Oh, and just for the record, no - Tone and Artie were not up for any awards for our series of promo clips we produced for the $2010 footy tipping season!
